April/May Oral Presentation
Pond Animal Report
Due: FRIDAY, MAY 12TH
During the month, we will focus on the pond habitat and its various animal inhabitants. Please help your child pick a favorite pond animal to learn about/research at home and prepare to share what she/he has learned about it. Following are some questions for your child to think about but please have your child feel free to share what most interests her/him about the animal of her/his choice.
●What does it look like? (interesting features)
●What is its life cycle?
●What does it eat?
●What animal group does it belong to?
●How does it protect itself from predators?
●Why did you choose this animal?
Your child may write down the information learned, draw a picture, or share her/his learning in another creative way – perhaps make a puppet, make a diorama, make a poster labeling parts of the animal, make a 3-D model, BE CREATIVE and most of all HAVE FUN! We will display all projects during OPEN HOUSE on Thursday, May 18th.

small boxes yarn wood

- Design the trap. Sketch out your plan. Decide how to attract a leprechaun and eventually catch him! Be clever, smart, and tricky!
- Build the trap. Use nails, glue, or string to make your trap “leprechaun tight.” Don’t make it too big. Remember you are catching a leprechaun not a giant!
- Be ready to explain how your trap works. Use your trap to demonstrate how it works.
- Bring your trap to school on Thursday, March 16th so we can set them to try to catch him on the 17th!

100th Day Project (optional)
100th Day Project
(optional)
Due: Monday, January 30th
On Monday, January 30th, we will celebrate our 100th day of school. To help the students with the concept of "100," each child is invited to make and display a collection of 100 of the same item.
I would like to ask for your assistance in helping your child think of the type of item they will collect, how to best display the collection, and how to organize their display so it is fairly easy to prove there are 100 items on the display. (HINT: grouping and counting by 2's, 5's, or 10's are helpful). I suggest the items be small, of little value, easy to collect and easy to securely mount/display...some potential ideas are stickers, shells, pennies, lifesavers, cereal, buttons, pasta, or beans...the possibilities are endless!!! You can also send the collection in a baggie if you would like!
Students will be asked to tell the following three things about their 100th day collection:
* What he or she chose to collect.
* Why that type of item was chosen.
* How the items are organized so it is easy to prove there are exactly 100 items.
I hope, should you choose to work on this project with your child, that it will be an enjoyable and creative learning experience for them. Have fun!

January
Oral Presentation: Due Friday, January 27th
I am asking each of our students to “interview” one of his or her parents to find out what that parent’s job is in the community. During the interview each student needs to find the answers to all or some of these questions:
1. Where do you work?
2. What is the name of your job?
3. What do you do at your job?
4. What are your work hours?
5. What is the best part of your job? What do you like the least?
6. Why is your job important?
7. How long have you had this job?
8. Is there anything else you want others to know about your job?
Please take time to work with your child on this interview. Children are so interested in what adults do and this will help them understand what you do while they are in school each day.
Your child may write down the information learned, draw a picture, or share the information in another creative way. For an example, dress up as you would for work each day.
Please remember to take in account the age level of your audience. If there are any technical words, please try to explain it in 7 year old terms!
Thanks so much for your help with this oral presentation assignment!

december
Dear First Grade Families,
As part of History/Social Studies in December, we are discussing the wide variety of holidays around the world. We are learning about special traditions and customs that are celebrated around the world at this time of year. We would like you to personalize this idea for the students with a special oral presentation assignment.
We would like each child to bring in an item that reflects a holiday tradition in his/her family. The actual item would be best, but a photo or a child-made drawing is also perfectly acceptable. Students will be asked to explain their tradition and when and how it became a tradition in their family. Please complete “The _________________________ Family” sheet on your family tradition – your child can draw and/or attach a photo. Hopefully this assignment will expose all of us in the classroom to some new ideas and will also create interesting discussions at home about the origin of a special family tradition!
Please pack and label items carefully. We will take special care with everyone’s treasures. Please DO NOT send irreplaceable heirlooms! If you would feel more comfortable with “adult delivery,” please bring the items into the classroom when you drop your child off and pick up the items at the end of the day.
Enjoy sharing the reason for a special family tradition with your child…and thank you for your continued support during this busy time of year!!

November
November Oral Presentation
Due Friday, November 4th
This month we will be creating a class “Mr. Thankful Turkey.” “Mr. Thankful Turkey” will be a way of visually expressing the many and varied things for which we all give thanks.
As a part of our creation of Mr. Thankful Turkey, each child is to create 2 thankful feathers at home with the help of family. Please help your child brainstorm a list of things he/she is thankful for and have him/her choose an idea to write on each of the 2 personal feathers. Please help your child with spelling, format and printing as he/she writes the words on the provided sheet. Next cut out the feathers.
Since Thanksgiving turkeys are generally thought to have bright tail feathers, we are asking that you and your child use creativity in the choice of materials to use when making your feathers. Some ideas are: glitter, stickers, markers, paint, colorful feathers…be creative!
On Friday, November 6th students will be expected to orally share his/her 2 thankful feathers with the class by explaining what they are thankful for and how they created their feathers. We will then put the feathers on Mr. Thankful Turkey for all to enjoy.
Thank you for helping us to remember all of the things that we are thankful for!
Have fun!

October
October Oral Presentation Homework
Due: Thursday, October 27th
For October’s oral sharing assignment, we are asking each child to find out the history of his or her name. Our names are very special to each of us and this assignment will allow each student to learn about the special stories, people, and inspirations behind his/her name.
Each student will be required to find out the significance of his or her name and share the history with the class.
*Were they named after a special friend or family member?
* Does the name have a special meaning?
Each student will also need to design and illustrate a name poster. He or she will share this with the class and explain how it was made.
We have been very impressed with the quality of sharing the first grade classes have been able to do…many of them have amazing stage presence! We are also working on our audience skills. The class is becoming very adept at asking good questions which is showing that they have been listening carefully and thinking about what their classmates are sharing.
Thanks for your support at home, and have fun researching your names!

Oral Presentation
Due: Friday, September 30th
For our first Oral Presentation assignment, we like to start with something simple so the children can concentrate on their presentation skills to feel confident and successful.
For this assignment we would like each student to present their favorite nursery rhyme. Each child will need to learn a nursery rhyme so that it can be recited (by memory not required) AND provide a “visual” of the nursery rhyme. The visual needs to be something that the child has made by him or herself. It can be a drawing, painting, collage, model, sculpture, etc. It can be done in any medium or in any combinations of mediums. It should be large enough so that the audience can see it easily but small enough for the child to handle.
Please start this project as soon as possible and work/practice with it in many short sessions. Waiting until the last minute will take the fun out of it and it will not be remembered as a positive learning experience.
Remember that we, the audience will be watching for:

- A speaker who is using a loud clear voice.
- A speaker who is looking at the audience.
- A speaker who knows their nursery rhyme and holds the “visual” so the audience can easily see it!
